Living Well by Design: Developing Healthy Physical + Social Environments
with Darcy L Jameson, Senior Development Director, Beacon Communities LLC, Boston, MA
Community Vision Stage
From Tiny Homes to large-scale multi-family development, the principles that contribute to "Living Well by Design" are similar including sustainable design and high performance buildings, affordability, healthy indoor air quality, and creating healthy social environments. Darcy will explore 3 case studies of communities that she has built with Beacon Communities LLC, a Boston-based mission-driven housing developer. The case studies will explore the social and policy goals as well as financing approaches including the redevelopment of the Old Colony public housing community in Boston (well-known for the infamous Whitey Bulger gang). The first phases met LEED Platinum standards as well as LEED for Neighborhood Design Gold and the current phase will include one of the region's first multi-family Passive Houses for low-income seniors; The Treehouse Community in Easthampton, MA an apartment community created for families adopting children who have experienced public foster care and seniors who are part of this intentional community and net-zero affordable and market-rate single family homes; and North Square at the Mill District in Amherst, MA, a mixed-income and mixed-use apartment creating new housing, business opportunity and job creation centered around a traditional New England green.
